David Woolley's Home Page
These pages currently contain information on Unix (particularly Linux)
basic software, particularly mail, news and time software and also
some software for processing morse code. See below for some notes on
technical aspects of the pages.
What's currently available:
- Linux and Other Unix Patches
- Patches to make generic versions of common Unix software work with
Linux, together with some more generally applicable, but not yet
in the official version, patches.
- Work in Progress
- Things I've been working on, but which are not really in what I would
consider a useable state.
- PGP Keys
- My public keys
Linux versions have been tested against a basically Slackware 2.1 system,
but with kernel 1.2.13.
- CNews Linux Patch
- Patches to make the CR.G release of CNews work
with Linux, bash and gawk.
(PGP)
- nntp Linux Patch
- Patches to make version 1.5.12.1 of the reference
implementation of NNTP work with Linux. Several
people have reported success with these. They
are derived from the Slackware patches for earlier
versions.
(PGP)
-
Network Time Protocol Stuff
- My Patches to the
Network TIme Protocol daemon,
version 3.5f from the University of Delaware to:
This software is under development, although development may have stopped
indefinitely. Please do not expect to receive any support in its use,
although I will try to give short answers to questions about the design
of it.
- fftmorse
- This is an enhanced port of the original FFTMORSE
morse code decoder to the DJGPP 32 bit compiler for
MS-DOS. It is still not very good at handling noisy
signals, but does work correctly with the SoundBlaster
Pro 2. The file here is in RCS format, but the most
recent version can easily be extracted with a text
editor.
(PGP)
My public keys. Note that I do not expect
to receive encrypted mail as a matter of course. These keys
are only as trustworthy as the access control on the website; you should
try to obtain independent verification and/or establish a chain to them
in the web of trust, before using them for any critical purpose.
I can be contacted by Email at

PICS
Originally this had a PICS label.
Unfortunately I misunderstood that the labels refer to ratings services,
not systems, even though, in my view RSAC only provide a system. This has
now been removed.
My present position on this is that unless Demon can come up with an
arrangement that does not require payments to third parties and permits
me to leave some pages unrated, or with a fuzzy rating, these pages will
be withdrawn when ratings become mandatory. (The reason for the need
for fuzzy rules is that I may include third party material on a
non-commercial basis, and not have the resources to check the contents
of such material for hidden messages.)
Page Design
Don't expect anything fancy in these pages. They aren't designed to
stretch the limits of any browsers (in fact, I'd like to know if they
break any browser).
These pages are on a server which is bundled into the basic subscription
price for
Demon's
internet access service. As such it has restrictions compared with
a commercial web page hosting service. Some of these are:
- The MIME types map is fixed and outside my control. This
means I may have to modify file extensions, particularly for binary
files and there is some risk that a change will break an existing file
name. (See
Demon MIME types map).
- Demon do not provide public ftp access
to this site, so you must use an http client. Under Unix you should be
able to run
lynx -source URL
in the background, if you just want to fetch a
file. If things seem to be sufficiently popular, I can ask to upload them
to Demon's ftp server.
- The Demon home pages server doesn't support HTTP/0.9, at the time
of writing.
Browser Compatibility
These pages have been verified with MSIE 2.0 (earlier version), Lynx 2.4.2,
Lynx 2.5 and
Weblint.
